Vancouver has a great collection of vintage ads from as far back as 1899. My favorite: “Valentine Meat Globules – Can be swallowed whole.”

Narwhal Co. Recycled Tie Accessories
Narwhal Co. creates accessories such as passport cases, fold wallets and cuffs from old ties. The company was born out of the desire to get out of the 9-5 rat race,”I knew I could either continue with the comfortable insanity of my day job or quit the 9-6 grind and give entrepreneurship a shot.” The prices are reasonable and offer a fun alternative to the mundane leather wallet.

Found On eBay: c1900 Vampire Kit
Definitely one of the more unusual finds on eBay. This kit contains everything you need for battling the undead:
•Leather bound Holy Bible
• Faded gold priests vestment stole
• Old bronze crucifix with skull and bones at the base
• Large crucifix within the lid
• Four wooden stakes with brass or bronze crucifix’s inset
• Wooden hammer
• Cut glass stoppered bottle presumably to take Holy Water
• Three green vials, corked, labeled “sacred soil”, “flour of garlic” and “sacred flowers”
Is the a genuine vampire hunter’s kit? Something sold to tourist? A prop from a movie? Either way, this would make one hell of a conversation starter! Is it just me or do the stakes actually looked used…

QSL Cards
Zach Ferguson, Senior Designer at design firm Ptarmak, recently inherited some of his grandfather’s belongings. From the early 40’s to the 60’s his grandfather (Andrew Andros) was an avid Ham radio operator. Part of the items Zach inherited were QSL cards. These cards were exchanged between operators to confirm contact between operators. Check out Zach’s original post of the QSL cards.

Sophisticated Seduction: The Illustration of Robert McGinnis
Watching the trailer for Tom Ford’s new film A Single Man reminded me of the illustrations of Robert McGinnis. McGinnis illustrated over 1,200 paperback novels and over 40 movie posters, including Breakfast At Tiffanys and several James Bond films. His illustrations of leggy, seductive women exude an air of danger and mystery; the men, debonair while holding a pistol or a whiskey on the rocks.

The Graphic Design of Jeff Kleinsmith
You may have some of Jeff Kelinsmith’s work and don’t even know it. Jeff has been the art director (the ONLY art director) at Sub Pop records since 1994. Jeff originally got his start working at The Rocket, and was heavily influenced by the mags design style, as well as such designers as Art Chantry. Kleinsmith is also a founding member of the now defunct BSK Screen Printing; one of Seattle’s original great poster makers. In addition to his gig at Sub Pop, Jeff is a designer and partner at Patent Pending Industries. Check out Jeff’s work here.

Last Minutes with ODEN
Last Minutes with ODEN follows Jason Wood as he puts down his cancer stricken dog Oden. Both heartwarming and saddening, the film captures the bond between animal and owner. Full film release in 2010.
